It is my pleasure to welcome you to Open Window School, a kindergarten through eighth grade independent schooldedicated to nurturing and inspiring students of high intellectual potential. While many schools have intellectually gifted students and programs, Open Window is a truly unique learning environment in which every aspect of the school has been specifically designed for gifted learners in line with our five core values. For more than thirty years, our balanced focus on meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted learners has created an environment that allows each student to thrive and realize her/his potential.
Open Window’s students are enthusiastically engaged in their learning, supported by well-trained and caring teachers who work in partnership with parents to ensure the very best opportunities for every child. The Open Window community embraces both our common focus on gifted children and the diverse range of unique cultural, religious, and experiential experiences of our families. Some may question why gifted students need their own distinct academic program. My own experience in working with high ability learners over the past three decades has led me to understand that gifted students need a faster pace, deeper and more complex content, teachers that "get" them, and a peer group that shares their passion for learning. Without this, many gifted children never reach their true potential. Whether in our lower or middle school, Open Window students are immersed in engaging learning activities, guided by caring, talented adults, and surrounded by supportive peers. Learning is focused on authentic, real world problem solving, enhanced by being part of a community of gifted learners where it is “ok to be smart.” As the News section of this website indicates, Open Window students have the opportunity to do amazing things!
Open Window also offers a full range of activities beyond the classroom. Students have the opportunity to participate in before and after school enrichment activities such as art, chess, choir, coding and programming, debate, martial arts, Minecraft, robotics, and various sports clinics. Middle school students can participate in team sports as part of the Cascade Middle School League. In addition to our school-year program, we also offer a wide variety of summer programs that are open to students who do not regularly attend the school. You will find more information on these and other programs on this website.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Open Window. While no website can completely capture the dynamic environment that defines this unique school, I hope that your exploration will provide you a taste of the engaging activities that our students experience on a daily basis and convince you to visit us in person at our beautiful campus on Cougar Mountain.
