Students attend WASMUN Model United Nations Conference at UW
Over the weekend of February 28th-March 1st, 7 Open Window students attended the WASMUN Model United Nations Conference on the University of Washington campus. They saw the Honorary French Counsel to Washington State speak and participated in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
They debated the trafficking of illicit narcotics, the financing of violent non-state actors, the preservation of cultural and historic sites in areas of conflict, promoting the exchange of knowledge and technology for mitigation and adaptation of climate change, and activities carried out by Nicaragua in the border area with neighboring Costa Rica (ICJ case Costa Rica v. Nicaragua.)
The student representing Italy in the ICJ helped the court finish their case faster than any ICJ court from previous conferences (they moved on to The Marshall Islands v. Pakistan, North Korea, India, United Kingdom, United States, France, Russia, China, and Israel.)
