While building a strong skill foundation in reading, writing and math, a student’s experience in the Lower School is filled with authentic, engaging and challenging activities designed for the gifted learner. The curriculum is rich with the 21st Century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. All students have their own learning device, iPads in K-3 and Netbooks in fourth, for constructing knowledge, exploring, discovering, designing and creating.
In addition to a strong academic program, there is also a significant emphasis on social and emotional learning with weekly lessons and experiences. The Open Window Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Program is a multi-faceted program that is committed to nurturing the development of the “whole child,” while also building a sense of community that is essential for creating a positive learning environment. Gifted students have unique needs, and our program has been developed to equip students with a skill set that can be used not only at school but throughout their entire lives. Foundational skills areas include; self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making.
Further developing the "whole child," weekly specialist classes in art, drama, library, music, physical education, science, Spanish and technology, offer opportunities for Lower School students to become scientists, create and be innovative, explore the arts and a global language, learn library skills, and build positive exercise habits and teamwork skills.
Kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms are joyful places of learning and tremendous academic and social growth. Each year builds upon the previous one, preparing students for the next step in their educational journey.
